While it may seem like wearing an SPF product on your skin all year round is overkill, if you are concerned about skin aging, there are a few things that you should know…
- UVA has a consistent intensity throughout the day, all year round and it can even penetrate through cloud and glass, which means that theoretically, it can still cause your skin to age while you are inside.
- UVA radiation reaches to the deep skin layers and contributes to wrinkles and skin cancer risk. Nearly all (95 percent) of the UV radiation that we are exposed to is UVA.
- Freckles, age spots, spider veins, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles that disappear when stretched, loose skin, blotches, moles and seborrhoeic keratosis warts/lesions can all be traced to UVA sun exposure.
- UVA radiation also attacks the skin’s elastin, weakening it and reducing it’s youthful suppleness.
To protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun, it is important to invest in a high-quality product with a high SPF. Check the ingredients to make sure the product you choose offers broad-spectrum protection and use it daily, after your regular moisturiser all year round. High quality SPF products shouldn’t be heavy or feel greasy on the skin; many are nourishing and have added skin-loving ingredients, which make them a welcome addition to your skincare routine.
In the clinic, we recommend the Heliocare range of products, which provide a high-level broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection and which also contain Fernblock®, a patented natural complex of powerful anti-oxidants that help to prevent damage to skin cells which appear as signs of ageing.
If you’re a lover of the Obagi range of skincare products, you will love Obagi Sun Shield ‘Matte’ which provides UVA/UVB protection in a non-greasy, PABA-free, and fragrance-free formula with an elegant matte finish.
iS Clinical also has a premium SPF product ‘Extreme Protect’, which protects healthy collagen from sun exposure and aging. It contains powerful DNA protectants that combat the tendency toward cell mutation caused by sun damage. It maintains and preserves healthy skin even during environmental exposure and aging.
