Acne is an extremely common skin condition that affects most people at some point.
Spots develop on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest. They range from surface blackheads and whiteheads (which are often mild) to deep, red, inflamed, pus-filled pustules and cysts, which can be severe, long-lasting and can lead to scarring.
Acne can be particularly frustrating skin condition for adults. Whilst many people only experience acne in their teens, sometimes adults can experience acne well into their 30s, 40s and even 50s, sometimes even for the first time.
Women tend to get adult acne slightly more often than men do. If you’re getting acne as an adult, it is possibly due to one or more of the following reasons:
- Fluctuating hormone levels
- Stress
- Family history
- Products being used
- As a side-effect of medication
- As a symptom of a medical condition
